Setting

Fate doesn’t have a specific genre attached to it, as by design it is a multigenre game. However, the Fate Core System does suggest a number of settings through the art and examples, and even has rules to help gaming groups collaboratively create their settings.

Evaluation

Complexity: 2; the core mechanic is simple, but players may need plenty of examples to grasp the use of Aspects, how to build Stunts, etc.

Popularity: 4; Fate is quickly becoming a very popular base system for a variety of gaming groups and published material.

Support: 3; there are a number of games that use variations on the Fate system, and Evil Hat has offered up a goodly amount of material for free, including the core game!

Completeness: 3; the game stands on its own well, but players who want to modify the game for themselves should check out the Fate Toolkit as well.

Versatility: 5; there are few games and settings that can’t be run with Fate, either as-is or modified to a given group’s taste.

Emulation: 4; Fate can handle most genres and settings with aplomb.
